Product Strategy for new student experience
2021

AccelerEd partners with educational institutions on next-gen learning technology. They brought Hello Iconic in to explore a redesign for the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC). We analyzed and reimagined key interactions on their student platform.
AccelerEd wanted to identify UX gaps and opportunities to improve the UMGC platform. We focused on three critical student journeys: online course registration, degree planning, and academic grades. We had 8 weeks to collaborate with AccelerEd's team, complete our analysis, and deliver a redesign proposal.
We executed four two-week sprints: Sprint 0 (Assessment): Evaluated the current experience and interviewed students and stakeholders. Design Sprint: Ideated with AccelerEd and selected UMGC students. Production Sprints: Created flows, wireframes, high-fidelity designs, an implementation roadmap, and gap analysis. We interviewed 20 people and surveyed 92 students. Key insight: UMGC students are busy professionals, many also parents or military affiliates so time is their most valuable resource. Our goal: streamline critical interactions to shift support from call service to self-service.

We delivered a modern, student-driven experience that shows learners exactly where they are, what comes next, and the steps to reach their goals. The designs prioritize simple, visual workflows that are personalized for each student, with clear feedback at every transaction point.

Managing interviews across multiple stakeholders with competing priorities was challenging. Success required balancing diverse objectives while staying anchored to what matters most: the end user—the UMGC student. As designers, listening well is just as important as designing well.
